Adventures in the underworld

Just a shameless plug for the first event I will be attending for Warhammer Underworlds! It is on the 6th of January and will be held at the excellent Battlefield Hobbies in Daventry (seriously if you live in the midlands and haven't checked it out yet, you really need to). Another Battle report for Zarbag and the Gitz. This time I was against Nick and his awesomely painted Farstriders. I drew quite a nice first hand of extreme flank, flash finale and solid gains for objectives and side step, ravenous, jealous hex, nullstone axe and confusion for power cards. The starting set up for the game looked like this… Nick went first and killed a bow grot with a shot and raptor strike scoring him precise use of force. Ouch. I managed to get jealous hex onto Farstrider straight away but Nick effectively countered it with great fortitude. After lots of moving around I managed to finish the turn with a sidestep and confusion to get Sourtongue into charge range of Farstrider and he went in and nailed the crit on one dice to do three damage! If not for great fortitude I’d have killed him! I inspired him at the end of his activation. I ended the round scoring extreme flank and drew keep them guessing and supremacy. I lost the roll for round two...

This week I played the second game using my Zarbag’s Gitz after changing the deck to have more ways to score glory passively. I was up against my mate Josh who fancied trying out the Thorn’s of the Briar Queen so he just used their deck straight from the box (more on this later). This was a bit of a strange game as I was playing a warband with almost as many models as I had and plenty of targets that I could kill quite easily – both unusual when playing the grotz. An exciting proposition for old Zarbag! I lost the roll and Josh chose a board with some blocked and lethal hexes to make my life difficult and push his advantage of ignoring them. I set up the cog board with three single blocked hexes in an offset manner which put the two lethal hexes on Josh’s board out of the way. We did objectives with Josh putting three in his half (one on and edge) and me putting my two as deep in my territory as I could. We placed models with Josh having the Queen and Varclav around ...

So it was time to start painting the Gitz. I already knew what I wanted to do here - recreate my paint scheme from about 15 years ago when I had a Night Goblin Moonclan army. I won't be posting any pics of these old models because well, they're pretty bad. For those of you who don't remember what Scorpion green looks like... Yeah its pretty bright and all the skin was done with that! So I wanted to keep the bright skin but do it as a top highlight rather than all over smothering! I started with one of the bow armed grotz as a safe place to make a few mistakes. I used Waaagh flesh as a base coat for the skin, layered with  Warboss green, Moot green and Moot green mixed with white. A fter a while I had him looking like this: Not complete but I was pretty pleased with how it was going so far. As a hobbyist and gamer of over twenty years I like to take an interest in new games as they are released. When Warhammer Underworlds: Shadespire came out a friend of mine (Nick) ran me and another mate (Josh) through a game with the starter - I thought it was cool and liked the deck building aspect but it didn't really grab me (could be that I got hammered using the Reavers!). Fast forward to the release of Nightvault and the look of the newer miniatures got me pretty excited. I did a lot of reading around and kept an eye on releases and then the friend who showed me Shadespire turned up with the Nightvault starter box, Zarbag's Gitz and the Eyes of the Nine! What a legend. We made the models immediately and had a day of trying all the warbands out against each other. What a blast!
